It is always important to make a good impression to the recruiter, human resources person-in-charge by a good presentation of your educational background, employment history, skills and experience to promote yourself. Below are some tips for you to create an easy-to-read-and-understand resume in order to help you score a high passing mark to be shortlisted for interview.


1. A career objective or summary

A statement of desired occupation, position matching with knowledge and skills.


2. Employment History

List employments from the most recent one, in each, commencement date, resignation date, company name, position/title, reason of leaving should be clearly presented. List out scope of duties and responsibilities and achievements.


3. Personal Information

List out name, date of birth, nationality, ways of contact, place of residence.


4. Academic Qualification

Start from the latest academic qualification such as a bachelor degree, each carries the start and end of study period, institute name, department and major subjects.


5. Recognised Qualification and Skills

List up vocational qualifications in typing, accounting, computer programming, legal, language level etc.


6. Expected Remuneration

Present your expected salary and remuneration in Hong Kong Dollars.


7. Available Date

Put in date available for employment.


8. Others

List up other skills, talents or training received.


Tips for Writing Cover Letter

A good cover letter should include:

1. Addressing with proper salutation with title

2. Indicate your position applying

3. Promote your suitability to fill in the position

4. Present an enthusiastic and 'can-do' attitude without exaggerating

5. Include contact points at the end,e.g. telephone number, email address

6. Always ensure correct grammar and spell check before send-out


Tips for Interview

"Opportunity favours the prepared mind". It is always wise to prepare for an interview. Below are some suggestions:

1. Expectation towards Position

To avoid mismatching and mis-expectation, it is wise to research the company which you are applying for; and re-confirm the goals and expectation about the position and the kind of industries, job nature which you like to work at.


2. Dress Code

Business suits for interview is recommended; tidy and clean is the principle


3. Logistics and Time Management

Punctality is a must to observe at interview. Research time required to arrive the destination, arrive a few minutes before the appointment will give a good impression to the counterpart. If for unforeseen circumstances you are unable to make your interview appointment, it is polite to call the contact person / your consultant to apologise and re-schedule the interview. If under any circumstances you would like to withdraw the interview, you should inform the contact person / your consultant as soon as possible, always have a reason if you cannot show up for an interview.


4. Interview Manner

It is important to be polite at the interview like, stand up while the interviewer steps into the interview room, slightly smile while answering questions with confidence. Showing enthusiastic and positive towards duties and possible problems are important that you are interested to the application. Keep an eye contact to the interviewer(s) while speaking. Never interrupt the interviewer's questions or comments and only express yourself when the interviewer finishes. Mobile phones, contact devices should be turned off during an interview.


5. Prepare for Questions

It is recommended to prepare for questions frequently asked, eg. reasons of leaving previous companies, reasons for looking for new job, understanding towards the position, ways to tackle problems found in the new position. While answering questions, avoid complaining previous company personnels as this may be interpreted as lacking in interpersonal skills or negative work attitude. Always be positive if you are asked a question which is unexpected even the answer is unknown. It is not a taboo to ask the description of the job duties and to ask additional information about the position and company. Furthermore, it is recommended to prepare clean and systematic keeping of certificates and employment references to be presented to interviewer upon request.


6. Self-Promotion

Use words that could highlight your achievements and how you learnt in previous companies and tasks but not exaggerating. Apart from that, you are suggested to express that looking for new job is related to your career goal, motivation and committing to new assignment.
